ABOUT
Lucia Jones is an award-winning Welsh painter. Since graduating from Falmouth University, she has exhibited internationally in solo and group exhibitions including BEEP Painting Prize 2018 and 2024. She is the 2025 Wakelin Award Recipient and has also been long listed for a number of art prizes such as John Moores 2020, Jacksons Art Prize 2022 and 2023. Her work is currently held in private and public collections including Australia, Austria, Hong Kong, Mexico, UK and USA.
Jones explores memory and female experience through the constructs of paint and film. Drawing on b-movies from the 1950s–90s, art history, and her own photographs, she recontextualises women as anonymised subjects within fractured and fabricated environments. Painting serves as a process of recollection and reframing — an act of dismantling and re-assemblage, of history and image, of personal and collective memory, through the female gaze. Each composition begins as a digital collage, drawn, cut in vinyl, and then painted element by element, built from the surface up. Glazes and varied mediums emulate the quality of film stills and photographs of films playing; raw wood is often left exposed, the partial priming of surface returning attention to paint on surface — to the act itself, paint as a filtration of memory through Jones's hand, a personal and physical response to what is borrowed, recollected, and reframed. Through what is included and omitted, the paintings interrogate how female identity is constructed and negotiated: the stereotypes and tropes imposed on women, and how those are internalised and resisted. The female subjects are often one with their surroundings, absorbed into the same surface they inhabit. The paintings are ciphers for lived experience — to be glimpsed and examined, inhabiting the tension between societal constraint and personal autonomy.
Jones is also the founder of Occupata, a curatorial entity that is artist-first, connecting artists with collectors.
