Often in my work, I begin with personal history and expand into collective experience through the incorporation of found imagery. For this exhibition, which embraces experiences of womankind as a whole, it felt fitting to start with the "original" woman. Eve’s story embodies the moment of becoming aware of being observed, of internalising the gaze, and ultimately of becoming a spectacle.

The painting, as its title suggests, is my interpretation of the moment after the apple—the instant of realisation. Eve sits in a constructed Garden of Eden, covering herself while gesturing toward a spotlight that underscores her sudden self-awareness. There is an absoluteness to this painting, in both it’s content and in regard to my practice. The composition reflects a synthesis of techniques and sources, creating a balanced dialogue between the diverse influences that define my work. The Garden itself is assembled from recurring types of source imagery: film, represented by the sky drawn from the prologue of ‘Dune’ (1984); personal photography, with the fountain taken from a photo I captured on my honeymoon; and art history, with Eve pulled from Domenichino’s ‘The Rebuke of Adam and Eve’ (1626). These disparate references coalesce to form a setting that feels both familiar and surreal. In terms of process, the painting brings together methods and techniques I’ve been exploring over the past few years: digital drawing, vinyl-cutting, realistic transcription, and the use of Black 4.0 paint to anchor the composition. The work reflects on the interplay of perception, self-awareness, and the origins of “making a spectacle of oneself,” while also marking a moment of cohesion in my practice—a point of reflection that offers clarity and direction for what comes next.

There was a meme format, not long ago, about the anthropomorphism of one's last molecule of serotonin. It made me laugh, and is quite a satirical take on enduring current societal pressures and everything that comes with it. I wanted to transcribe this energy into paint, playing up the melodrama. It occurred to me that there's nothing more intense than a period drama and although this one takes inspiration from the film ‘Värmlänningarna’ (1957), it harks to tropes also referenced in current cinema. Most recently in ‘Barbie’ (2023) where ‘Depression Barbie’ is cited as watching the BBC's Pride and Prejudice for the seventh time after a list of other oddly specific actions. I had honestly never felt more seen and called out in a cinema than in that moment! This painting exists in the same sphere as that energy, isolated eyes blanked out because they can't see anything beyond, their surroundings a reflection of their inner worlds. Could also be blind panic.

This work explores self-doubt and self-perception, created during a period of personal transition and change within my artistic practice. It draws inspiration from Bladerunner (1982) and images of Sophia Loren found on Instagram. Bladerunner is a source I often revisit. In the context of this painting, the film’s exploration of the place new androids—or replicants—hold in society resonates deeply. Deemed hazardous and alien, their existence challenges societal norms. It parallels the very human question posed by this work: What do I do when I don’t fit?

This piece also marks a return to working on an alternative/raw surface, in this case wood, referencing my early university works where surface and process exploration were central. Intentionally exposed areas of raw wood bring us back to the materiality of the surface, the literal act of recording of memory in paint, grounding the work in its physicality. This painting also pushed the technical boundaries of my practice through the intricate curtain effect, achieved through painstaking vinyl cutting.

This work was painted during my time in Virginia last year during the @far_cynefin residency @visible_records and would not have been possible without the support of @elysiumswansea @celfcymryuarts @waicymruwales

Very demure, very mindful - Oil and Acrylic on Board, 4 x 4 inches, SOLD 🔴

This painting draws inspiration from a still of Marlene Dietrich in ’Dishonored’ (1931). I chose it due to the striking lighting and precise frame composition that characterises this era of cinema as well as the projected image of the femme fatale—doomed, manipulative, or in this case, both. The latter is central to the narrative of the piece, reflecting an interplay of power and vulnerability. The depiction of women in cinema fell into this femme fatale or evil trope without much else in between until quite recently. It is not aspirational in terms of morals, necessarily, but the strength, composure and refinement endures as something to achieve. With this in mind, the title of the work comes into play. It references a viral TikTok by Jools Lebron where the appropriateness of fashion and makeup choices is critiqued with the phrase ‘Very demure, very mindful’. It takes this expectation, previously an external pressure from society but reclaims it as an act for self. The combination of the now and then, reinforces the exhibition's dialogue between past and present, merging cinematic nostalgia with modern commentary.

A subtle disruption within the painting—the unlit candle—was another deliberate choice, an aberration from reality. It acts as an invitation to reflect on the tension between artifice and authenticity, where the women in the work are imagined but also real.

The standing woman interrupts the pastor and town leader at the pulpit who is enraged and flabbergasted by the outburst. What struck me in this scene from the film ‘Värmlänningarna’ (1957) was the passivity of the women in the congregation; they had been there, done that and they got the t-shirt. No reaction. It made me laugh uncomfortably when I first saw it, which is why this frame, this painting, made the cut for the show. It serves as an acknowledgement that some things don't change and that speaking your mind is sometimes dismissed as an overreaction. It is certainly something I've experienced as a woman. This painting also dabbles, by extension, in the generational expectation and associated behaviours, 'how things were' equating to 'how they should be' and what occurs when that course of action is carried forward. I wanted the woman speaking to appear overwhelmed in this work, hence the rising water within the headspace and the heavy use of black. The paint is Black 4.0 by Culture Hustle, a pigment that absorbs light offering a parallel to the content of the work - more on that soon!

I painted this when working at a not so pleasant office job and was thinking a lot about aspirations versus reality, in my case the balance of a 9-5 and an art practice. The ferris wheel in the background of this work is the crux of this painting, speaking to the repetitive and cyclical nature of daily life and tasks while also serving as a metaphor for the spectacle of modern existence—where work, expectations, and personal ambition swing in the balance as we go around. The woman in this painting clings to the phone like a lifeline amidst the navigation of personal identity and the pressures of societal performance - and all with a smile (just)! This work also pulls inspiration from ‘Wasp Woman‘ (1959).

One of several paintings inspired by ‘Wasp Woman’ (1959), this piece served as a study in experimenting with colour. It explores the effects of pink for underpainting and challenged me to work with a palette that stepped outside my usual preferences. This approach allowed me to push my boundaries and explore new tonal possibilities within my practice. It is also an example of detail being focused on one area of the painting, in this case the mouth. I also used, as is the case in a lot of my work, Black 4.0 by @culturehustle - initially a nod to cinema in applying a 'letterbox' to the figures in my work (emulating the technique used to preserve the original aspect ratio of a widescreen image when it's resized - which I enjoy in itself as a parallel to preserving memory within the paintings) it has become a void space in which the majority of my figures reside, a painted space for reflection and analysis.

This exhibition is centred on the phrase, 'Don't make a spectacle of yourself', and our engagement with it as women. One of the earlier works created for the exhibition, this painting is a reclamation of sorts. Using a culmination of my own photography and drawing on the iconography of Marilyn Monroe, it explores the interplay of concealment and power. I had watched an interview with Susan Strasberg, an actress from the same era as Monroe, discussing walking down the street with her. Monroe was going unnoticed before asking "Do you want to see me become her?". Strasberg describes it as something akin to a lightbulb being switched on and everyone suddenly recognising Monroe. It got me thinking about the dichotomy of the seen and unseen, what we choose to reveal and the power in that choice. In the context of the exhibition, it poses questions around the choice of 'making a spectacle of oneself' and if we have true control over that and any consequences that follow.

Recurring motifs in my practice, such as rising water and drawn curtains, are also central to this piece. The absence of visible eyes, a recurring theme in my work, also suggesting concealment. What is being shown is representative of an internal landscape, or part of it; the curtain serves as a metaphorical barrier, the means of controlling what is shown, same for the gloves. The painting is ultimately a musing on the control we have through the performative nature of identity.

This painting addresses the performative aspects of identity and interaction during the everyday. Based on my own photography of a blue velvet curtain, it is part of a series exploring the liminal nature of curtains and how women within my work interact with them. While Hayez’s ‘Consiglio alla Vendetta’ (1851) influenced the composition and the themes within the work such as the depiction of women in ‘collaboration’, albeit with less sinister undertones, the work also marks a shift in technique. i.e. how I handle the face and figure with pure realism. Unlike 'Tempting' (2023) and 'My Last Two Molecules of Serotonin' (2023), also featured in this exhibition, I chose not to obscure the eyes to reveal alternate visual planes but to maintain literal masks. It plays into the theatrics, expanding on the concept of ‘staging’ my paintings. It also carried forward a change in relationship between viewer and the figures in my work, not sharing the internal world of the women featured, but having viewers bear witness to their concealment of it.

This painting addresses the performative aspects of identity and interaction during the everyday. Based on my own photography of a blue velvet curtain, it is part of a series exploring the liminal nature of curtains and how women within my work interact with them. While Hayez’s ‘Consiglio alla Vendetta’ (1851) influenced the composition and the themes within the work such as the depiction of women in ‘collaboration’, albeit with less sinister undertones, the work also marks a shift in technique. i.e. how I handle the face and figure with pure realism. Unlike 'Tempting' (2023) and 'My Last Two Molecules of Serotonin' (2023), also featured in this exhibition, I chose not to obscure the eyes to reveal alternate visual planes but to maintain literal masks. It plays into the theatrics, expanding on the concept of ‘staging’ my paintings. It also carried forward a change in relationship between viewer and the figures in my work, not sharing the internal world of the women featured, but having viewers bear witness to their concealment of it.

My name is Lucia Jones and I am a Welsh painter; my practice concerns memory and identity through the constructs of paint and film. I work from an amalgamation of art history, personal history and contemporary media as well as film to create paintings that explore self-perception and more recently the female experience as a whole.

I studied at @falmouthuni and have been painting for the past decade, exhibiting nationally and internationally with work in private collections across the globe. This painting, one of the few without a figure, references ‘Bozzetto di Sipario’ (1870), a curtain study by stage designer Angelo Quaglio. In an exhibition about performative behaviour, heavily influenced by theatre, I wanted a work that referenced the ‘beginning’ as it is a good place to start; the motif of the stage curtain offers this point of departure. Drawn back, spotlight at the ready, the pulled curtains evoke that ‘ta-da’ moment, an unveiling that feels universal when we present ourselves to the world. The ubiquitous spotlight, cast on an empty black void leans into this feeling of anxiety, uncertainty, anticipation and the weight of expectation; it is the moment before the spectacle but could be the spectacle in itself. In any case, it sets the literal stage for the exhibition, presenting the included paintings as moments to be witnessed and viewed. For me, ‘Here we go again (after Quaglio) also serves as an allegory for the creative process—the excitement of uncovering new ideas, the anxious yearning for validation, the frustration of creative blocks and the pressure to consistently deliver.

This painting, the last I created for the exhibition, encapsulates many key aspects of the show, particularly the depiction of women in relation to the phrase “making a spectacle of oneself.” A derogatory phrase, this work is a reclamation through themes of womanhood, solidarity, and defiance. It depicts women as instigators of ‘the spectacle’, rather than victims, highlighting their power and agency; the painting portrays a Mexican standoff—whether in the arenas of office politics, world politics, or the ongoing questioning of female rights and expectations, I feel like the moment touches on something universal.
The work plays with a mix of sources, hitting the big 3 for me; self, film and art history, creating a blend of reality and fiction in paint. A photo of shrub-land I’d taken in 2022 amplifies the energy of the scene from ‘Wasp Woman’(1959) with an ‘Old West’ nuance. There is also a nod to contemporary media in the title from an episode of ‘The Office’(2005). Regarding art history, the inclusion of an artwork in this painting is an acknowledgement of transcription throughout the show; the natural choice was Manet’s ‘Olympia’(1863). The portrayal of Olympia, a modern, real woman and a prostitute, was controversial for her direct gaze and assertive posture—qualities that challenged the traditional and idealised representations of women in academic art at the time, such as Titian’s ‘Venus of Urbino’(1534), which was the basis for Manet’s work. I liked this concept of departure from source, of progression into something new - my hope is that this carries throughout the body of work, prompting reflection on the current state of societal pressures on women and the agency women assert in response.

‘Jones’ work delves into memory and self-perception through the mediums of paint and film, with a focus on the female psyche within painted spaces. Drawing from obscure 1950s-90s B-movies, she recontextualises female figures, transforming them into anonymised subjects within fragmented and fabricated environments. Liberated from their original cinematic settings, these figures inhabit the intersection of the revealed and concealed, the real and imagined. Absorbed into her painted world, their contexts are reshaped, acting as ciphers of lived experience and inviting viewers to explore the fluid nature of memory and identity.

Spectacle builds on this exploration by focusing on the performative nature of societal expectations placed on women, where the act of “making a spectacle of oneself” becomes a source of both tension and empowerment. Here, Jones expands her investigation of female identity, using painting to navigate the external pressures and the expectations thrust upon women.’
