This piece was featured in 'Wakelin Award 2025: Lucia Jones' at the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery. Following her selection as the award winner, the gallery invited Jones to present a solo exhibition of new and recent works, alongside three pieces officially acquired for their permanent collection.
"This painting was inspired by the opening of the film 'Dishonored'(1931), drawing on an exchange where Dietrich's character is confronted by the concierge of her building. The scale of this work is interesting. It is defiant, small, solid, like the character in the film. I didn't feel the need to go further than her face, mouth, to convey the resolute nature of the moment. I often isolate the mouth within my work, it serves as an anchor (in this case for a phrase) and encompasses expression without the need for much else. The use of a veil in this work, informed by source material, takes the place of a curtain; its transparency a metaphor for speaking her mind. Again, there is an ominous resurgence of the black paint." - Jones, 2026
