• Acid- and lignin-free and made to last.• The natural finish enhances vibrancy and depth.• Textured matte surface that enhances depth without losing clarity.• Handmade wooden frame from Italy.Print of the painting ‘Back into the hedge-maze, head over heels’, 2025. This work was created as part of Jones’ exhibition Wakelin Award 2025: Lucia Jones at the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery, Swansea.N.B The image on the print is as pictured, and is a slightly cropped version of the original painting. This is done to best suit available framing ratios."My works involve metaphorical and visual boundaries in painted space, often playing with translucency and solidity. For this work I created a digital collage of my sources and drew/cut vinyl stencils in order to apply layers and sections of the composition in isolation. I treated the shadows of the leaves uniformly in this painting, light-absorbing black (4.0 by Culture Hustle) paint forming a lattice across most of the surface. A new approach, it created a subtle fluctuation between foreground and background, never quite static, which I enjoy. This work was also more experimental by including myself in the composition. The leaves and floor were applied in two passes, varying the dilution of oil paint with glaze medium to create drips and stronger contrasts, while adjusting pigment to better capture light. The figure was painted within its own stencil, emphasizing the protrusion of legs from the hedge. The painting reflects on the chaos of dating, I initially imagined a woman being dragged backwards through a hedge or sinking in like the Homer Simpson meme. I see it as a joyful dive in, inspired by meeting my husband, but the woman could also seen as stuck in or sucked into a strange and void-like hedgerow."
