This piece was featured in 'Wakelin Award 2025: Lucia Jones' at the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery. Following her selection as the award winner, the gallery invited Jones to present a solo exhibition of new and recent works, alongside three pieces officially acquired for their permanent collection.

“A standing woman interrupts the pastor/town leader at the pulpit - he is enraged and flabbergasted by her outburst. What struck me in this scene from Värmlänningarna (1957) was the passivity of the women in the congregation; they had been there, done that and they got the t-shirt. No reaction. It made me laugh uncomfortably when I first saw it, which is why this frame made the cut for a painting. It serves as an acknowledgment that some things don't change and that speaking your mind is sometimes dismissed as an overreaction, an unfortunately common experience as a woman. I wanted the woman speaking to appear overwhelmed, hence the rising water within the head and the heavy use of black. This pigment absorbs light offering a parallel to the content of the work. It harks to film in regard to the letterbox effect you see to correct the aspect ratio of footage. Starting as a nod to the medium of sources, it became a device that took on more meaning the more I painted, as an artist dictating the aspect ratio, choosing what to show, a void that collects a lot of the work." - Jones, 2026
