'Painted for Jones' recent solo exhibition 'Tales from the Cutting Room Floor', this work was inspired by the film Moonstruck (1987). Merged with other memories, the painting reflects on Jones' Italian heritage, her relationship with her late grandmother and the memories surrounding both. Recollections of hand embroidered tablecloths collide with the lived and shared experience of Italian family tropes in this work.
In a rare choice Jones references the physical medium of film by including part of the 'letterboxing' at the bottom of the painting (black block). She utilises the contrast between it and her signature painterly marks to draw the viewer back to the materiality of the object, taking us from the subject and back to the process of painting and how she commands it as a vessel for memory.
After care: Due to the nature of the priming process which allows areas raw canvas to be visible (rsg on calico) do not hang in direct sunlight or above/near a heat source as this can lead to cracking.
